How to make your own 3D abstract plaster wall art

Discover my Cost-friendly Secrets to Creating Stunning 3D Abstract Plaster Paintings.

Let's get to it! I don't know if you can relate, but every corner of my home needs to be styled because I just love a story in every room I go; it just feels amazing. But we all know it's too expensive to style every inch of your home, especially the larger ones. There are other important bills to pay, you know! So, I have been doing a lot of DIYs lately to lower my cost, and here's one of my favorite ones.

HERE'S HOW I MADE IT HAPPEN

Step 1: First, let's gather all the products we need:

  • One canvas, I chose the 36x48 size, but feel free to pick a size that suits your space. Choose any color you like, but for me, white always wins!
  • All-purpose plaster, available at Home Depot. I recommend getting a bigger one for larger canvases to avoid running out.
  • A large spatula for the dripping effect. If you can't find the right size, a big brush works too. I used two different sizes.
  • Wood glue for the plaster mix. My painting had some cracks initially because I skipped the glue on my first round. The glue ensures the plaster doesn't crack, especially for those big 3D chunks.
  • Water for the plaster mix. We need to soften it to work with it.
  • Acrylic paint in your choice of color. I went with white, but feel free to choose your favorite. My advice? Stick to neutral colors for a soft aesthetic and classy vibes. But hey, it's your painting, do whatever you want, and I won't micromanage you ;)

Step 2: Start by mixing the plaster in a bucket with wood glue and water. Achieving the right consistency is key. Based on my results, add 10%-20% of water compared to the plaster amount. Start with a little water and work your way up to avoid making the plaster too soft. After adding water, incorporate glue. Begin with less and add more as you mix. It's crucial to add a good amount of glue to prevent excessive cracking. To test the plaster's thickness for the chunky texture, mix a small batch, let it dry on a separate paper, and voila, you'll know if it works or not.

Step 3: Once you've tested your plaster, let the painting begin! Drop a big chunk of plaster in the desired spot and use the spatula to create strokes. Watch the attached video for a clearer demonstration.

Step 4: Take your time with the strokes, varying sizes and lengths for a consistent effect. Check out the video for a closer look at creating the lines. After finishing, let it dry for at least two days. Gently touch the plaster to ensure it's ready for painting.

Step 5: If you notice any cracks, cover them with more plaster for a perfect imperfect look. Let it dry again before painting the canvas.

Step 6: Choose a frame, hang your beautiful painting, and enjoy the masterpiece you've created!

I'd love to see your results. Shoot me an email when you're done so I can admire your fantastic Wall Art. Happy crafting!
